Seeking Asylum–A Choice Made Out of Helplessness

As a new year begins, some people move, change jobs, or settle into new rhythms of life. There’s a group of people, however, who remain in limbo—still drifting in diaspora, quietly awaiting decisions that will shape their fate. They are asylum seekers. When we hear the term “asylum application,” do we feel sympathy, confusion, or distance? Do those who cross oceans seek only a piece of paperwork? Too often, asylum seekers are labeled, misunderstood, and rendered invisible, their individual stories flattened into stereotypes. In reality, political asylum is a long journey with no clear end. Driven by painful experiences in their home countries, they are left with little choice but to leave in search of safety and a life free from fear.Welcome to Zephyr Society. Listen to Pipilu, who “walked the line”, and transgender friend Zilu, as they share what they experienced in China and what compelled them to leave. Through listening, we begin to see asylum seekers as real people—and take a first step toward understanding, empathy, and care.
